July 27, 2025 | Stern Grove Festival
by Dave Golden
It was a classic July afternoon in San Francisco, foggy, cool, and unmistakably Stern Grove. But the weather didn’t dampen the crowd’s spirits. The amphitheater was packed with country music fans bundled in denim and fringe, cowboy hats nodding beneath the trees. Leather boots climbing up the hills as people settled in for a double bill of modern outlaw country, ready to welcome Jaime Wyatt and Orville Peck to the amphitheater.
Southern California native, now based in Nashville, Jaime Wyatt kicked off the afternoon with a gritty yet soulful set. Opening with “Goodbye Queen,” her set included “Rattlesnake Girl” and “Fugitive,” and she closed with the rousing “Neon Cross,” followed by a bow to San Francisco with her cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Althea.”

Orville Peck entered the stage with his trademark mask and deep baritone voice, opening the set with “Big Sky” and “Turn to Hate.” He moved through a crowd-pleasing set that included “C’mon Baby, Cry,” “The Curse of the Blackened Eye,” “Dead of Night,” and a moving cover of “Cowboys Are Frequently, Secretly Fond of Each Other.” He closed with the rollicking “Daytona Sand” before returning for an encore performance of “Bronco.”
