Foxy Shazam ignited Bottom of The Hill‘s stage on Thursday with their theatrical charisma and glam rock, anthemic sound. They were giving rock opera goes to the circus vibes and their performance was nothing short of thrilling and endearingly chaotic. Frontman Eric Nally’s vocal range conjures the likes of Freddy Mercury (Queen), Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Meatloaf, and Justin Hawkins (The Darkness), transforming into a magnetic expression that is all his own. As he belts his heart out and jumps on top of everything in his path, it is clear that he is on this earth to perform. His dynamic performance even included lighting two cigarettes at once and then eating them after inhaling a few drags, his showmanship in full force. The supporting members were just as engaging and the band as a whole are superstar performers who know how to work up a crowd. Sky White (keyboard) plays a lot of the set with one leg propped up on his keys while grinning from ear to ear, and at one point even played with the crowd holding up his keyboard. Alex Nauth (backing vocals and trumpet) had fans headbanging along with him and his trumpet as he played on his knees by the end of their set. The night was a whole experience that even came with a sword swallowing side show ( Hot Fix Side Show ) that performed in between bands. I was so busy with chasing Nally around with my camera, trying desperately to capture his antics in the darkly lit environment that I couldn’t tell you what songs were played but it was entertaining nonethless! A Foxy Shazam show is not to be missed.
Mathcore band The Number 12 Looks Like You opened for Foxy Shazam with a captivating set that included the entire crowd sitting down in the venue while lead vocalist Jesse Korman sat screaming in the middle. It was an impressive and unique moment that I have never experienced at a show before. Korman had everyone engaged in such a way that it brought unexpected intimacy to an otherwise energetic and intense performance.
Lobby Boxer was the first opener of the night but I didn’t get to the venue in time to cover them. Apologies to the band.
