I was trying to describe what a Future Islands show is like to a friend before this show. I talked about the songs – how they were intricate, delicate, and raw. I talked about Samuel Herring – how he’s a unique kinda performer – “the growl”, the dancing, the energy, the way he puts every ounce of his being into every syllable. I talked about the feeling – it’s a performer and a performance that you just can’t take your eyes off of and makes you feel inspired, and happy, and connected. After trying to describe it, I realized that it’s REALLY hard to describe a Future Islands show. You just have to kinda experience it yourself.
Olympia, Washingston’s Oh, Rose opened the show, with singer Olivia Rose doing a sultry, brooding set that got the crowd ready for the main act.
Of course, every show is additionally improved by the beautiful Fox Theater in Oakland, too.
