After opening with “Fire,” Alison Moyet introduced her show on Friday, May 16, 2025, as a “mashup” of her work celebrating 40 years as a solo artist. Telling the sold out Fillmore audience that she selected the songs for the set list from her oeuvre that work together, her mashup included soulful works such as “Such Small Ale” from her most recent album Key as well as “So Am I” (originally released on Essex in 1994, updated re-released on Key), and “This House” from Hoodoo. The edgy “Beautiful Gun,” the pop-synth “Filigree” represented the tonal variety of her work.
Clearly wanting to put her Yaz pieces in perspective, Moyet reflected on her career noting that music is “not about what I did” but rather is “what I do.” Still, nostalgia is a powerful force and the audience erupted with joy at the opening chords of “Nobody’s Diary” and “Only You.”
With perfectionistic tendencies, Moyet stopped and restarted “The Impervious Me” and the second encore song “Love Resurrection.” Treating the audience to a bit of insight into her process.
Adding a bit of philosophy before “Filigree,” Moyet relayed the inspiration for the song – an arthouse movie in Amsterdam she saw with her partner. The song reflected the theme of the show: as we endure the challenging aspects of life, we are often treated to “shiny,” glorious moments. Alison Moyet’s signature contralto voice and infectious smile was one of those moments.
