The funniest thing to see at a Mountain Goats show is the difference between John Darnielle when he’s singing and when he’s not. Multiple times during a song he’ll go from passionate fervor as he belts out lyrics and then immediately goes to dancing around the stage with the biggest of smiles on his face like he can’t believe he’s here doing this.
Of course, he’s played at the Fillmore many, many times and God Willing he’ll play there many more but the unbridled enthusiasm he brings to every show I’ve seen him at is infectious. Hearing him introduce each one of his songs with an explanation or just a quip is both extremely fun and a small flex. This should be obvious but if you ever get the chance to see them, take it immediately.
