Dan Bejar isn’t lazy.
The former member of the New Pornographers slouches and crouches his way across the August Hall stage as he croons between sips of beer. It might, at first, come across as a smidge lackadaisical or loose, slightly amateur even. But it’s all an act, he’s both snake charmer and snake to the indie rock heads in the audience; a lounge singer for people who don’t hang out in lounges. He always seems a little bit tired, a little bit exhausted and, in that, a kind of mirror towards some people in the audience. The rest of Destroyer seem perfectly fine as they work as a backing band to a very great performance.
…or maybe he really is just that tired. That’s definitely a mood.

Jennifer Castle opened up the show with a nice arrangement of quiet acoustic folk tracks, mostly on guitar and transitioning to piano for the final few. Strangely enough she wasn’t marketed on the August Hall website, so her act was a nice surprise for most.
