Conspiracy of Beards performed a short, moving set at the World Tree of Hope Celebration at Grace Cathedral on Monday, December 8. Sponsored by the Rainbow World Fund, the tree bedecked with thousands of folded paper cranes inscribed with peoples’ desires, represents unity, “peace, love, and humanitarianism.” Responding to the concerns about our world today the speakers articulated, the Beards chose to open with “Anthem,” Cohen’s song of hope during dark times. Hearing the deep resonant voices of the Beards was a touching circle of life moment as the first choral group of the evening was the San Francisco Boys Chorus. The SFBC’s clear, treble range was reminiscent of the clarity of youth. In contrast, the Beards’ “The Land of Plenty,” offered mature voices reminding us of the complexities of adulthood. Closing with their iconic “Hallelujah,” the Beards’ majestic sound filled the sublime Grace Cathedral.
