You know the rock is truly rockin’ when it doesn’t just knock your shoes off, it knocks the musician’s shoes off as well!

There’s a certain type of language I don’t want to use when discussing The Darkness. The kind of “Ya see kids, this is what ‘Real’ music looks like” type rhetoric that bemoans the lack of rock and roll in the public zeitgeist and yearns for a better time when this style of music was more famous. I’m avoiding this because it often denigrates literally any other style of music that is popular at this time (See: Hip Hop, Electronic Music, most Pop) and I think in the big ol’ year of 2025 we can end this stinkin’ thinkin’.

A great part about The Darkness is that despite their throwback sound to glam and heavy rock from the 80’s, it never feels like a gimmick. They’re not there to just be a bland pastiche of old sounds, they’re their own unique flavor and the crowd at the Fillmore was open and receptive to that. If you want that kind of throwback, you would go see a cover band, and they’re very far from just a simple cover band.

Mark Daly was the perfect opening act, bringing a hard rock sound that fit the mood of the headliner while bringing their own energy (and hair!) to the show. Will very much keep an eye on them.
