The Stern Grove Festival opens its 89th season with New Delhi artist Peter Cat Recording Co. and opening band Marinero, with DJ Starfarikeeping the beat going before the show and between sets.
Marin native Marinero opened the show with songs drawn from his experiences in the Bay Area, such as “Through the Fog” and “Outerlands”, written while he was living in SF at 25th and Fulton, and “Beyond the Rainbow Tunnel”, referring to the Robin Williams Tunnel in Marin. Now based in LA, Marinero played some tracks from new album “La La La”, which draws from his time there, and his love for movies with songs like “Die Again Yesterday” his take on a James Bond theme.
Headliner Peter Cat Recording Co. set kicks off with the sounds of Suryakant Sawhney on the harmonium for “Flowers R. Blooming”. Performing for nearly 2 hours, the 16 song set featured many of the band’s hits, including “Soulless Friends”, “Floated By” and “Memory Box”, before closing with “I’m Home”. The band’s energy steadily increased throughout the set, bringing the audience to their feet several times and, at moments, having nearly everyone dancing.
