English singer-songrwiter and guitarist Charlie Cunningham delivered a moving, flamenco-infused performance at the Swedish American Hall on Wednesday night. His set left the audience in a state of quiet captivation, excitement, and a clear desire for more.
Cunningham began his solo acoustic show with tracks like “Happening Lately” & “Best Part” from his latest 2025 album “In Light” before delving into his earlier, beloved catalog. In a moment of charming British wit, he openly shared his plans for the evening, humorously announcing how many songs were left, quipping, “Isn’t it nice to know in advance, though?” The audience responded with laughter and nods of appreciation for his refreshing candor. Forgoing the typical theatrical exit and return for encores, he instead stayed on stage, joking that he’d prefer to simply get right into the final two songs—a move that felt both honest and genuine.
Cunningham’s mastery of the flamenco guitar was on full display. His set was woven with lively, precise acoustic strumming and intricate flamenco flourishes that served as the foundation for many of his songs.
Opening for Cunningham was local singer-songwriter Beti Masenqo, who was joined by cellist Alex Togashii. Their deeply personal and beautiful acoustic set perfectly established the intimate and reflective tone for the evening.
